Week 7 Slugging Along

This week was my most generic week of production yet -- all I did was animate 2 shots (though one of the two shots will become my new proof of concept). I'm excited to play around with lighting and shading and see what is within the realm of possibility for this film. Animation is proving to be very time-consuming, but so far, I'm on-track with production and having help with the coloring phase I think will allow me more time for fun in post and compositing.

On the administrative side of production, I need to set aside some time this week to make a list of all of the backgrounds I will need to paint (I might have moved the camera around a liiiiitle too much). I think simple backgrounds might be better for the busier character acting shots. Otherwise, I would like to work in 3 more detailed establishing shots (of Giulia's apartment, the coffee shop as seen from her window, and the exterior of the coffee shop (where I think it would be nice to truck out from at the end as we watch the "couple" have a silhouetted conversation at golden hour.))

I also need to follow up with my talent on voice work (one of my actors is finishing up exams in Italy and then we will discuss the cost of booking a recording studio), and another of my actors I think need to talk further with to figure out a time to record (just a couple cursory phrases). I have a LOT of characters in my film and I'm trying to get a solid idea of whether it will feel weird to not even hear them make "effort" type noises, but I do have some solid, Italian coffee shop ambiance to set in the background. That said, I think I will need to find a sound designer...

That's all! The semester is definitely picking up but I'm not feeling too stressed about anything. If anything, I wish I could animate a little faster because working out timing and making things "feel right," is going a little frustratingly slow, but I suppose that's what you call a learning curve!

  1. Well, the shot you DID animate had a TON of characters- no wonder it took so long!

I think for CUs you can get away with simple BGs.

It will only seem weird if there are no effort sounds for characters in CUs, but those in the BG should be okay with ambient sounds.

    Good work!
